I recently had the pleasure of helping a lovely couple buy a house that could be best described as their dream home.

They’d carefully worked through their own checklist, their favourite parts of the city and budget constraints before coming up with Northcote as their target suburb.

Some may ask “why Northcote?” but to me it made perfect sense. She’d lived in Collingwood – and loved the inner north’s unique buzz. He’d lived in the suburbs – and in other international cities – and was quite keen to find a house that could be a long-term home.

With a budget below $1.5 million, a busy working lifestyle and a love of period renovated Victorians, their quest in this exciting suburb was rewarded late last week.

Couples and Young Families Enjoy Northcote’s Bohemian Atmosphere

Unsurprisingly, Northcote is well-suited to couples and young families for all of the above reasons. Just north of trendy Fitzroy North and Collingwood, it’s well-serviced by public transport options (multiple rail stations and trams along bustling High Street) and the Eastern Freeway.

But it’s Northcote’s soul and its exciting gentrification story that make it such a highly prized suburb.

“Some may ask “why Northcote?” but to me it made perfect sense.”

Any visitor could lose themselves in Northcote’s offerings; from the Palace Westgarth cinema (a beautiful Art Deco building) to the Sister’s Market at the local town hall; from the amazing Asian fusion, Sri Lankan and vegetarian restaurants along High Street to the truck street food.

Northcote not only offers a great gluten-free café, but The Fruit Peddler, a gluten-free store next door. And for the booklovers out there, Allsorts Books can easily swallow up an hour!

One word comes to mind to describe all of this: bohemian.

A Perfect Blend of Food and Culture

Northcote has developed over the years. While it was once home to many Italian and Greek migrants, it is now home to an eclectic blend of folks; families, artists, couples and visitors.

“Any visitor could lose themselves in Northcote’s offerings…”

Housing styles range from early Victorian to post-war and beyond. Many gorgeous period houses have been lovingly protected and restored over time. But one other precious aspect the suburb hasn’t lost is its great cultural story.
