Safety Beach was originally called Shark Bay before it was decided this might scare off tourists. The small suburb, set between Mount Martha and Arthurs Seat, proves popular with holidaymakers during the summer months due to its scenic beach and excellent fishing conditions.
Martha Cove, a large inland harbour and residential development, has changed the appearance of the area slightly. Restaurants, cafes and retail facilities are all planned for the precinct. Currently, the Martha Cove Harbour is the only protected harbour on the Mornington Peninsula, and it is a safe haven for many local vessels.
Golfing enthusiasts enjoy the use of two courses: Safety Beach Country Club and Mount Martha Valley Golf Club. Safety Beach families send their children to primary and secondary school in nearby Dromana.
