Port Fairy is located just west of Warrnambool, along the southern edge of Victoria. It is the point at which the Moyne River joins into the Southern Ocean. Initially known as a whaling port, these days the town is a popular tourist location and home to a large fishing industry.
The main commercial district is based around Bank and Sackville streets, where you will find quaint cafes and restaurants, wine bars and crafts stores. Along Ocean Drive there are some lovely beach spots facing the Southern Ocean, while Beach Street provides a patrolled beach overlooking Port Fairy Bay. Griffiths Island has some lovely scenic walks and private beaches. The Port Fairy Warrnambool Rail Trail is a popular bike route following the old railway line.
The Port Fairy Folk Festival has been held on the Labour Day weekend since its inception in 1977. The festival was originally focused on Irish music due to the town's Irish heritage. While it now has a folk, blues and world music approach, it remains very family-friendly.
