Endeavour Hills was called Doveton North until 1970, when it was renamed to honour the two hundredth anniversary of Captain Cook's arrival in Botany Bay. The hilly suburb is bordered by the Monash Freeway and Dandenong Creek. Many of its single and double story brick homes have been built on steep blocks, so residents enjoy scenic views of distant suburbs. From James Alexander Reserve it is possible to see as far as Port Phillip Bay.
The main shopping centre, Endeavour Hills Shopping Centre, can be found on Heatherton Road. It features over eighty specialty stores, including a Big W, Coles, Safeway and Dick Smith. For sports and leisure, the Endeavour Hills Leisure and Function Centre has a two court stadium, a health and wellness club and world-class gymnastics facilities, as well as an adjacent skate park, which appeals to young people. Lysterfield Park and Churchill National Park contain walking and cycling tracks, picnic and barbeque facilities, and both are within easy walking distance of Endeavour Hills.
There are three high schools in the area: Maranatha Christian School, Gleneagles Secondary College and Endeavour Hills Secondary College. There are also seven primary schools. For train travel into the city, Hallam Station is close by, and buses travel regularly to Dandenong Station.
