Though Beveridge is only a small township, it will always hold a special place in Australia's history, because it was the birthplace of our most infamous bushranger, Ned Kelly. The town is also close to Mount Fraser, an eroded extinct volcanic cone. From the north side of the hill the explorers Hume and Hovell first saw Port Phillip in 1824.
Until recently, Beveridge was primarily a rural township. However, it is starting to attract the notice of developers. A 260 hectare residential development called Mandalay features an 18-hole golf course and a clubhouse with a restaurant, bar, shop, gym, pool and tennis courts. There are also plans for a school, childcare facilities, playgrounds and parklands in the vicinity.
Beveridge currently only has one school, Beveridge Primary, though there are plenty of other schools in nearby Wallan, Whittlesea and Eltham. For shops, the Hunters Tryst on the Old Hume Highway is post office, cafe, tavern, beer garden and bed and breakfast all in one. Wellington Square Shopping Centre in Wallan is also only a short drive away.
