Belmont is an established residential suburb in Geelong's south, bounded by the Barwon River and Waurn Ponds Creek. Belmont Common is a large stretch of parkland set along the Barwon River. Once a gathering ground for early aviators, the area is now a relaxing riverside haven for residents. It features numerous sports ovals, a wildlife reserve, the Barwon Valley Public Golf Course and the Belmont Sunday market.
There are nine schools in Belmont, including Oberon High School and Belmont High School; two of the largest state schools in Geelong. Though most residents prefer to drive, numerous bus routes travel through the suburb on their way to the city, Highton and Grovedale. Road coaches to coastal towns Torquay, Lorne and Apollo Bay also pick up passengers in the area.
High Street is the largest strip shopping centre in Geelong and its coffee shops, restaurants, supermarkets, hairdressers and medical centres are constantly abuzz with activity. Five minutes down the road you will find Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre, which features over eighty specialty stores.
