In 2011, the Victorian Government launched the $1 million Flinders Street Station Design Competition.

A total of 118 architects, engineers and urban designers submitted their innovative concepts for the Melbourne icon’s redevelopment, which ranged from ultra-modern to spacious and green.

This week the six finalist entries were revealed. Members of the public have been invited to vote on a People’s Choice Award winner until Monday August 5. Though an overall winner has already been selected, this is an opportunity for people to have their say on the future of the station.

Take a look at some of the incredible entries below.

Eduardo Velasquez, Manuel Pineda and Santiago Medina

This entry, titled ‘A courtyard within a station,’ was designed by three University of Melbourne students and alumni. Their natural green concept includes wide public spaces, an urban beach along the north bank of the Yarra, and a ferry terminal connecting commuters to other parts of the city.

John Wardle Architects and Grimshaw

This design also draws attention to the Yarra with its high brick vaults and widened riverbank concourse. A highlight is its New York-style elevated park, which would act as a landscaped sanctuary in the heart of the city.

Ashton Raggatt McDougall

This proposal includes converting the existing administration building into a new senior secondary school, constructing a 12 storey commercial office building and a 20 storey residential development, and adding a large rooftop garden which would act as a habitat for plants and birds.

Zaha Hadid Architecture and BVN Architecture

If this design is chosen, it will include a new performance amphitheatre overlooking the river’s edge. The original station building would be restored, while the complex would gain a new concourse, galleria space and a piazza.

The government has two years to make a decision about the chosen design’s construction, though the winner will still walk away with $500,000.

The overall competition winner and the People’s Choice winner will be announced on Thursday August 8.
